I visited the Maya Biosphere reserve and met with Carlos Soza in the late 1990s. I was a writer with Canada's International Development Research Centre and this was my first trip to the field IDRC. ProPéten was still partnered with CI at the time and we were supporting research they were doing to establish land concessions and sustainable harvest levels for forest products. I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Carlos. Though I can't say I knew him well, he did tell me of his humble beginnings and of how fate provided him the opportunity for an education and a different life than his parents. What really marked me, however, was his committment to his community and to the Peten. I am very happy to see that his work continues and that his successor is cut from the same cloth.
